鯨 — Kujira — the whale has been part of Japanese coastal life for centuries. In whaling communities such as Taiji in Wakayama Prefecture, whales were treated with deep respect and ritual ceremony — honoured rather than simply hunted. The deep indigo glaze echoes 藍 (あい, ai) — Japan's traditional indigo dye, used for centuries in ceramics and textiles, and historically worn by samurai for its practical properties. Combined with the classic nami (波) wave motif, this bowl carries a genuine piece of Japan's coastal heritage.
