Kan'nyū (貫入) is one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic techniques — a deliberate, controlled cracking of the glaze surface created by the difference in contraction between glaze and clay as the kiln cools. The result is a web of fine lines unique to every piece, a technique prized since the Momoyama period (1573–1615) and still practised by Japanese tougei (陶芸) artisans today. It is not a flaw.
