天目 (Tenmoku — “eye of heaven”) refers to an ancient glaze tradition originating in the Tianmu mountains of China, later adopted and refined by Japanese potters during the Kamakura period. The characteristic dark glaze with its subtle variations of colour and texture was prized by Zen monks and tea masters for its quiet depth and unpredictability. Each piece fired in this tradition carries a slightly different pattern — no two are ever the same.
