天目 — Tenmoku — heaven’s eye

Tenmoku (天目) is one of the most celebrated glaze traditions in East Asian ceramics. The name derives from Tianmu Mountain in China, where Japanese Zen monks first encountered these dark, iron-rich glazes during the Song dynasty (960–1279) and brought them back to Japan. In Japan, Tenmoku glazes became prized in the tea ceremony — the deep black surface with its subtle speckled or “hair’s fur” patterning was considered the ideal vessel for matcha. The brown feathered edging on this dish is a direct echo of that centuries-old tradition.
