The calligraphy on this yukata is the Iroha (いろは) — one of Japan’s most celebrated classical poems, written in the Heian period (794–1185 AD). It is a pangram: every syllable of the Japanese phonetic alphabet appears exactly once, woven into a poem of profound Buddhist meaning. In translation:
Even the blossoming flowers will eventually scatter — who in our world is unchanging? The deep mountains of vanity, we cross them today and we shall not see superficial dreams, nor be deluded.
