In classical Japanese swordsmanship, metsuke (目付け) describes the warrior’s way of seeing — not fixing the eyes on any single point, but holding a soft, wide awareness that takes in the entire scene. The great swordsman Miyamoto Musashi wrote of it in Go Rin No Sho (The Book of Five Rings, 1645): look at distant things as if they are close, and close things as if they are distant. The stern expression on this Kokeshi is not anger — it is metsuke: total presence.
