The word 武士 is built from two kanji: 武 — martial strength — and 士 — a person of moral standing. In the Edo period, samurai generals were expected to master calligraphy and poetry alongside the sword, because Bushidō (武士道) taught that true power comes from stillness, not force. Armoured on the outside, composed within.
