Fired in the Tsuboya district of Naha since the 17th century, when the Ryukyu Kingdom unified three separate kiln traditions under royal decree. The bold glazes are recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Okinawa. The matcha bowl — 抹茶碗 (Matcha-wan) — is held in both hands as a gesture of humility. A ritual unchanged for 800 years.
