Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) is considered the last great master of ukiyo-e. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), his prints brought a new sensitivity to landscape art in Japan — atmospheric, seasonal, and deeply felt. Hakone was one of the most dramatic stops on the old Tōkaidō road, the historic highway connecting Edo to Kyoto. Its steep mountain passes, misty valleys, and views of Mount Fuji made it a favourite subject for Hiroshige, who returned to it across multiple series. His work influenced Western artists including Whistler, Cézanne, and Gauguin.
