藤娘 — Fuji Musume — the Wisteria Maiden of Kabuki.
Fuji Musume (藤娘) is one of Japan’s most celebrated Kabuki dance pieces, performed since the Edo period (1603–1868). In it, the spirit of a wisteria blossom takes the form of a young woman in a purple kimono, dancing beneath cascading fuji vines — an expression of longing, beauty, and love that cannot be held. The wisteria (藤 — fuji) has symbolised enduring love and graceful strength in Japanese culture for centuries. The artisan who painted this Kokeshi’s kimono was painting that same story.
