A lone pine bends over still water. In the distance, the perfect cone of Mount Fuji rises above the horizon. This is Hokusai at his most serene. The Framed Umezawaza in Sagami Japanese Woodblock Print is crafted in Japan using the same traditional woodblock printing techniques as the original by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), from his celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji — widely regarded as one of his greatest masterpieces. The colour quality is exceptional. Supplied in a high-gloss black frame with a cream double mount, it arrives ready to hang.
✦ A Little Piece of Japan
Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富岳三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūrokkei) was published between 1830 and 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies. The series was so popular that ten additional prints were added, making 46 in total. Umezawa in Sagami — a coastal area in what is now Kanagawa Prefecture — shows Fuji from the shoreline, framed by a windswept pine. Hokusai's genius was to show the same mountain from entirely different perspectives, each one revealing something new about Japan's most sacred peak.
