Published between 1829 and 1833, it is the first and most celebrated print from his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Hokusai was in his seventies when he created Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富岳三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūrokkei). The Great Wave — its full title Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura — was the opening image of the series, and it immediately captured the imagination of Japan and, later, the world. The wave's distinctive claw-like foam tips and the use of Prussian blue — a pigment only recently available to Japanese artists — gave the print a visual power unlike anything that had come before. It influenced Van Gogh, Monet, and the entire Western Impressionist movement. Few images have travelled further from their origin.
