"Shono Hakuu" (庄野白雨) — Shono: White Rain — is plate 46 from Hiroshige's celebrated series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (東海道五十三次), published in 1833–34. The series documented the post stations along the old highway between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. This scene, with its diagonal rain lines and rushing figures, became one of the most copied and admired images in Japanese art history. The rain itself — rendered in bold parallel strokes — was a technical innovation that influenced artists worldwide, including the Impressionists.
