Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) published this print in 1857 as the thirtieth image in his celebrated One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series. The subject is the Kameido Tenjin Shrine’s plum garden in Edo (now Tokyo), home to the most famous plum tree in the city — the Garyū-bai (臥龍梅), or Sleeping Dragon Plum, whose ancient, twisted branches spread low across the ground like a sleeping dragon. In full bloom, its blossoms were so brilliantly white that they were said to illuminate the night. Hiroshige captures the tree in extreme close-up, a bold compositional choice that influenced Western artists including Vincent van Gogh, who made his own version of this print.
