Sensōji Temple in Asakusa is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, founded in 628 AD. Its full name — Kinryuzan Sensōji (金龍山浅草寺), meaning Golden Dragon Mountain — refers to a legend in which a golden dragon descended from the heavens to protect the sacred image of Kannon enshrined within. By the Edo period, Sensōji had become one of the most visited sites in the city, beloved by merchants, artisans, and pilgrims alike. Hiroshige captured it here at its most vivid — a place of faith and festivity, unchanged in spirit to this day.
