The Framed Evening Rain in the Akasaka Paulownia Field Woodblock Print is a superb quality authentic Japanese woodblock print, crafted in Japan using the same traditional printing techniques as the original by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), the last great master of the Japanese woodblock print. The colour quality is exceptional. Supplied in a black frame, it arrives ready to hang.

This print is from Hiroshige's celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei). The paulownia — kiri (桂) — was one of the most prized trees in Edo Japan, its timber used for fine furniture and musical instruments, its flowers a symbol of the imperial family. The Akasaka district, now a busy part of central Tokyo, was in Hiroshige's time a quieter area on the outskirts of the city, known for its gardens and groves. Rain scenes were among Hiroshige's greatest achievements — he had a rare ability to render atmosphere, mood, and the particular quality of light on a wet evening.
