Born 150+ years ago in Tohoku, northern Japan, Kokeshi were handcrafted as gifts for mountain hot spring travellers. The name derives from ko (子, child) and keshi (芥子, poppy) — innocence and gentle beauty. The black kimono with sakura (桜) detailing evokes mono no aware (物の哀れ) — the bittersweet beauty of things that bloom and pass. At Tokyo Gallery, we believe you are not just buying a Kokeshi doll.
