Ariwara no Narihira (825–880) was one of the Six Poetry Immortals of Heian-period Japan, celebrated for his passionate and melancholic verse. Hokusai chose him as the subject of one print in his final single-sheet series, One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse — a remarkable late-career project in which Hokusai reimagined one hundred classical love poems from the anthology A Hundred Poems by a Hundred Poets, narrated through the voice of a fictional elderly nurse. The series was never completed; Hokusai died before finishing it.
